Jetnet Intercity

s Airline Management System () was successfully devised schedule one airline operators in South Africa. Their attractive website can be visited at www.stratoair.co.za.

In essence the system is operated using the Internet, which offers the advantages of convenience, immediacy, flexibility, reliability and accuracy - for the traveller or agent making bookings. Furthermore, it provides a powerful tool for efficient management by the operating company. All this is achieved with maximum flexibility and minimum cost as there is no need for expensive and unwieldy infrastructure.

Once has been incorporated into the airline's website, bookings can be made from any computer linked by a modem and telephone line to the Internet. Advantages flow:

The cost of appointing agents is reduced markedly because all that is needed is a PC with Internet connectivity to start an agent off. The appointed agent will enjoy enhanced efficiencies in the booking process and hence increased profits, in that there will be instant confirmation of bookings, replacing the former process of having to wait for confirmation of bookings. The agent can also keep track of bookings and have up-to-date information regarding Airlinees on offer, hence providing a better service to customers.

Payment can be made electronically providing security for the traveller or the appointed agent and the operating company.

The traveller can make bookings through agents as before but, in addition, direct bookings can be made as far ahead as required from the home, hotels, airports, ports and even from abroad - indeed, from wherever there is a computer and phone line, and at only the cost of a local telephone call. Clearly, there is greater choice and convenience to the traveller as compared with the traditional system of having physically to make bookings at a restricted number of appointed booking offices or terminals.

For the operating Airline Company and its agents, the advantages are apparent. There is direct and immediate (real time) recording of the booking of seats on the aircraft, with a continuous updating of the state of the booking on any particular Airline service. And, of course, payments are secure, precise and auditable.

Listed below are just some of the benefits to the Airline Company:

  • instant recording of seat bookings
  • monitoring of the state of individual Airline bookings
  • security of payment for bookings
  • reliable manifests of Airlinees
  • awareness of specific needs of passengers; invalids, disabled, etc.
  • instant adjustment to routes on offer
  • instant adjustment of discounts for marketing purposes
  • infinitely wider catchment of customers
  • informed planning and management of the Airline service through report analysis of the demographic profile of past users
  • build-up of client loyalty
  • database of past users for marketing ability to set up a booking point quickly and cheaply allowing adaptation for seasonal changes with enhanced efficiency there will be greater profitability

also offers a number of add-ons and customisable features to meet the specific needs and demands of the Airline Company. Add-ons include ticket administration, website and trip feedback for passengers' comments on the standard of service, and WAP-enabled bookings and recording of information through a cell phone interface that facilitates walk-on sale of seats.

Even though Intercity as a whole can be tailor-made on a case-by-case basis, there are certain areas that will almost always require modification for each Airline Company. For example, where trips cover several days of travelling there may be a need to include hotels on such trips. A further example is that the system can be modified to sell ""space"" for the movement of packages and parcels for cargo companies and courier services.
